What is Noetics?

  • The word comes from the Greek Nouous, meaning mind, awareness.
  • The term was used in the early 19th century by a few philosophers, but was made popular in the 1970s by an astronaut, Edgar Mitchell, when he returned from the Moon and established the Institute of Noetic Sciences to explore and explain the experiences he had on that journey.
  • The field is variously defined as exploring and explaining:
    • the processes and products of mind
    • the nature of profound human experience
    • what connects us all

What is "Noetic Moments"?

"Noetic Moments" is a weekly radio show exploring the history and current developments of the science of consciousness.
We air Sunday mornings (and other times) on KXCR community radio, in Florence, Oregon, USA

Who is Dr. Ruth Miller?

Ruth L. Miller, Ph.D. is a systems scientist and futurist who has integrated the study of consciousness into her research and practice since the 1970s. A series of illness-related experiences in the 1980s led her to understand the degree to which mind affects body, and led her to study and practice the spiritual path known as New Thought.

Since the 1990s she has integrated the two realms of research as a minister serving Unitarian-Universalist, Unity, and Religious Science (Centers for Spiritual Living) congregations, while continuing to publish papers on the use of intuitive methods in futures research, as well as books on the history of mind-power in our culture, and working with the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Gaia Living Systems Institute, and other organizations exploring consciousness and culture.
